On This Day, 40 years ago in January 1976, the fifth E-class generation was presented in Bandol, France. The Mercedes-Benz W 123 model series was a big hit from the beginning. Customers were willing to wait up to one year for their car due to the great demand. This was the reason why its predecessor, the W 114/115 "Stroke Eight", was still produced at the same time until December 1976. The W 123 series is also one of the most successful E-Class generations in numbers: around 2.7 million vehicles were built, almost 2.4 million of which are saloon cars and a good 200.000 T models.
